The stranger in the black-and-gold mask was different. She knew the stitching along its edge because she had sewn it herself, yet the curator who commissioned it had never agreed to wear it in public.
“One question in every room,” he said when she caught him watching her reflection. “One honest answer. At dawn, the masks come off.” Beyond the balcony doors, Venice shone on black water. Elara accepted before she could decide which answer frightened her most.
