Mara Voss stepped from the hired car into wind that tasted of salt and iron. The coastal hotel rose before her like a dark wave, its windows shuttered against the winter gale. At the desk, Elias Ward waited with a ledger open and a fire already lit.

He showed her the east corridor himself. Twelve doors lined the polished floor, each numbered in brass. “Only twelve,” he said quietly. “Anything else is a trick of the storm.”

At midnight the corridor lengthened by one door. Number thirteen glowed the color of arterial silk. Mara stood before it in her robe, pulse loud in her ears. Elias appeared at the far end, barefoot, a coat thrown over his shoulders. She answered his warning by turning the handle. They crossed the threshold together.
